Dr. Hrishikesh.D Pai

Dr. Hrishikesh D. Pai MD, FCPS, FICOG, has been in the field of IVF since 12 years. He did his one year fellowship in Reproductive Biology from the University of Melbourne Australia, in 1989. He is the scientific director of Two IVF units in Mumbai- 'The Babies & Us' Fertility, IVF & ICSI Centre at Opera House & 'The Advanced Fertility Centre' At the Lilavati Hospital, Bandra. He is one of the pioneers in the field of Micromanipulation in India. His was the third unit in India to have started the procedure of Micromanipulation-ICSI in 1996 in Mumbai.He has received training in Preimplantation genetics at the two leading institutes in the world-the Verlinsky unit in Chicago & the Az Vub in Brussels.His unit was the third unit in India to have started Preimplantation genetics diagnosis in 1998.

He has also been instrumental in establishing the first Assisted Laser Hatching Unit in India. The unit has delivered one of the first few laser hatched twins in India in the year 1999. He has helped to start many IVF units all over India-Guwahati, Jullandar, Raipur, Kakinada, Nagarcoil, Amritsar, Vijaywada, Allahabad, Kanpur to name a few. Presently, besides the Mumbai units, he is running IVF units in Allahabad, Kanpur, Palany & Nagercoil in association with local Gynecologists.

He is in the process of starting the third IVF unit at the Batra Hospital, New delhi. Recently he had the distinction of helping a 60 year old woman, acheive pregnancy with the aid of gamete donation. This is probably the eldest woman to have delivered in India. In September 2002, Dr. Pai received the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Rashtriya Ekta Award for yeomen work in the field of Infertility. This was given to him at Teen Murti Bhawan, New Delhi, at the hands of Mr Buta Singh & Mr Sushilkumar Shinde.

Besides Assisted Reproductive Technologies Dr Pai has been active in other fields of Gynecology. He is a consultant Gynecologist at the Lilavati Hospital, Bandra, Mumbai, which is one of the most modern private corporate hospital in India. It is a 350 bedded fully Air conditioned hospital. The IVF unit is located at the Lilavati Hospital. He is also an Honorary Gynecologist at the Kurla Bhaba Municipal General Hospital. Dr. Pai was one of the youngest to become honorary in 1991. Here all the patients receive free treatment, Dr Pai has always felt committed to the well being of poor people & he continues to devote part of his time for serving these people. It has to be noted that very few Gynecologists in Mumbai, are given the option of working in both Private & Public hospitals. Dr Pai is one of the few who enjoy this privilege.

He is the Hon. professor at the D. Y. Patil Medical College, University of Mumbai. This is one of the best private Medical schools in the country Dr. Pai's unit is a teaching unit for both undergraduate & postgraduate medical students. Dr Pai has taught thousands of students during his career as a teacher in the university of Mumbai. He has a teaching experience of 15 years. Recently the D. Y. Patil Medical School has become a deemed university & can hold its own medical exams.
Dr. Pai is the administrator of Pearl Family Welfare Hospital, which is one of the leading Family planning Hospitals in the country. This hospital was started by his father Dr. D. N. Pai, a leading thinker, freedom fighter, professor & Padma Shri(1973). The Pearl Hospital has performed yeomen service in the field of Family planning in India. This hospital is run by Dr. Pai's wife Dr. Rishma Pai (herslf a leading consultant Gynecologist, attached to Jaslok Hospital) & Five other Gynecologist.

Dr. Pai is the Chairman of The Genetics & Fetal Medicine Committee of FOGSI from 2002 till 2006. Incidentally FOGSI or the Federation of Obstetrics & Gynecological Socities of India is an all India apex body of nearly 17,000 Gynecologists. Dr. Pai has become chairman at a very young age. He is planning to contest the prestigious post of Vice President of FOGSI for the year 2004.

Dr. Pai is the honorary librarian of the Mumbai Obstetrics & Gynecological Society., a member body of all the gynecologists of Mumbai, having a strength of 1700 members. Dr Pai will probably become one of the youngest Presidents of Mumbai OBGYN Society in the year 2009(this post of President is by hierarchy promotion, once you reach the senior post of Joint clinical secretary)

He is also the Secretary of the Indian association Of Gynecological Endoscopists.This is the premier body of all the advanced Gynecological endoscopists ,who perform Laparoscopy & hysteroscopy. He will probably be the president of this organization in 2007. He has been recently elected Member of Managing Council of Indian College of Obstetrics & Gynecology, the college which is affiliated to FOGSI with its 17,000 members. This is the main academic body of the All India Federation. He is probably one of the youngest elected member of the College.

Recently Dr. Pai got elected to the Managing Committee of the Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction, the premier association of all ART- IVF units in the country.
