Diagnostic Tests recommend before this Surgery
Generally, the below mentioned tests are suggested to diagnose this issue. But if the candidate has any chronic health condition or if the doctor thinks that an underlying condition is involved, then some more advanced tests might be required.
The list of recommended tests includes:
- Physical examination:In this, the doctor does a careful evaluation of the patient’s penis and testicles; also checks the associated nerves for sensation
- Blood tests: Blood sample is taken to check for signs of Diabetes, low testosterone levels and other health conditions
- Urine tests (urinalysis): Like blood tests, urine tests are also done to detect signs of Diabetes and other health conditions
- Ultrasound: In this test, there is usage of a wand-like device (transducer), which is held over the blood vessels that supply the penis. This creates a video image that allows the doctor to see if there is any issue with the blood flow. Sometimes, this test is done along with an injection of medications. These medications are injected into the penis to boost the blood flow and for a better erection
- Psychological exam: During this, the doctor might ask questions to find out if the patient is suffering from depression or to find out the presence of any other psychological causes behind Erectile Dysfunction
Penile Implants: Types and Conditions
- Non-inflatable, semi-rigid or malleable rods
- Very easy to use for men with limited dexterity
- Just need to bend it up when needed and down when not in use
- Totally concealed because all the devices are inside the body
- Very low priced
- Owing to this kind of implant, the penis is mostly semi-rigid and just needs to be adjusted accordingly for sexual activity
- There is post-operative pain because the penis needs to adjust itself to a continuous semi-rigid condition
- Gives quite an abnormal look and feel
- Leads to deterioration of thinning of flesh
- Two-piece Inflatable Penile Implant
- It is quite easy to use but can be bothersome for those with arthritic or those who difficulty using their hands, because the penile pump is small and inflating it can be a bit tricky
- Just need to use the pump for erection and down when not using
- All the devices are inside the body
- Gives a bit abnormal appearance
- Causes worsening and thinning of flesh around the penile area
- Three-piece – multi component Inflatable Penile Implant
- Easy to use, need to pump it up when needed and release the valve to deflate it
- The pump is larger, and this makes it easy to inflate
- Totally concealed
- Only prosthesis that gives a normal look
- Least amount of post-operative pain
- Most amount of rigidity achieved through this
- There is less amount of damage caused to the penile flesh
How do the Penile Implant work?
3-piece Penile Implant – This Penile Implant is known as a 3-piece inflatable Penile Implant, because it has three different components. A 2-piece inflatable Penile Prosthesis has only two components: the attached cylinders and the joint reservoir and pump component. As an alternative to the reservoir being placed at the back of the groin, it is attached with the pump into a unit, which fits comfortably inside the scrotum. The benefit of having a 2-piece prosthesis is that it is short surgery and less complex and there is no need for any devices to be in the abdomen. The disadvantage is that the smaller reservoir may not give the desired results in the matter of erection.
To expand the implant, the patient needs to press the pump. Then, the pump transfers saline from the reservoir into the cylinders that is there in the penis. This inflates them leading to an erection. A deflation valve is there at the base of the pump and once this valve is pressed, the fluid goes back to the reservoir. This deflates the penis and helps it to come back to its normal condition.
Semi-rigid Rod – As the Penis is always in a semi-rigid condition, this puts pressure on the inside areas of the penis, and this can cause injury. At the same time, there is lower chance of infection owing to lesser number of parts

- A tube called catheter is passed into the bladder through the penis for collection of urine during the procedure
- Then an incision is made in the lower Abdomen, under the head of the penis, or at the base of the penis
- After this, the surgeon stretches the spongy tissue that is there in penis, which fills up with blood during an erection. This tissue is found within both the two hollow chambers known as the Corpora Cavernosa
- The surgeon will opt for the implantof appropriate size
- Then the implant cylinders are placed inside the penis. The sizes of the implants are customized to match the exact body measurements of the patients
- So, for example, if the surgeon is implanting a 2-piece inflatable device, then a pump and valve are positioned inside the scrotum. Likewise, for a 3-piece device, the surgeon will also implant a fluid reservoir below the abdominal wall via an internal incision
- Once the device is in the required position, the surgeon will close the incisions.
- A Penile Implant procedure general takes about 45 minutes to an hour

The surgeon will provide specific instructions about when the patient can continue with his usual regimen. Mostly, men can resume sexual activity and strenuous physical activity after about four to six weeks after the surgery.
Around two weeks after the surgery, the stitches are removed. At this point, the surgeon might suggest fully inflating and deflating the inflatable Penile Implants twice during the day. This helps the patient to get fluent about how to use these implants and stretch the area around the cylinders.
Also, during the healing process, the surgeon might recommend keeping the penis up on the lower abdomen and pointing towardsthe bellybutton to avoid downward curvature.
